Croquet

In Benjamin Disraeli’s novel Lothair, there is a description of how Mr Blenkinsop travels to Brentham to play croquet and takes with him several “instruments and weapons for the fray” (letters, Dec 7, 8 & 10). That sounds to me more like dangerous than devious.
