How to react gracefully in defeat (Mike Atherton, Oct 3, and letter, Oct 4) is shown by Baron Gottfried von Cramm. After being beaten in a 1937 Davis Cup match dubbed “the greatest match in the history of the world”, he went to the net to congratulate Don Budge with the words “Thank you, Don, for making me play the best tennis of my life”.
